Author's note: Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Every year, I make it a point to acknowledge this important date. But this time, I’ve decided to do something different—to express my understanding and sensitivity around this matter through poetry. I believe in the power of words to spark empathy, reflection, and, above all, hope. With this in mind, I’m sharing a poem titled "From Silence to the Abyss", a way to give voice to what often remains hidden, in silence
From Silence to the Abyss
It all starts gradually
first revealing itself
through images
perhaps coming from a dream,
nobody knows,
then the words come
deep, long,
slow, heavy,
repeated by you in secret,
when you give shape and voice to your thoughts,
words
that slowly gain strength,
transforming themselves step by step,
into the strongest voice in your mind,
and that's when, frightened,
you hide,
pulling in your arms and legs,
desperately trying to escape
from a fear that hurts
but has no name,
And you, only now you realize,
but you've been talking to yourself
for a long time, in silence,
holding your sorrows in your hands,
and even though you know you're facing
a secret passage, an abyss
made up of unknown, thin and fragile lines,
you long to wake up, without no one knowing,
on the other side.
And yet,
you remain in the tide
of a time that cannot be forgotten
and you bravely continue
trying to erase the pain
while you wipe away, alone
tears that travel from afar
like messengers from the past,
and remind you all the time
of your desire to be king
if only for a day.
Even if the path is made of stone,
You know that the heart blossoms
and you dream of the day
when pain gives way to unbridled joy,
when you feel that someone has arrived
with words of spring in their hand.
The idea of people talking to themselves in silence, not far from the abyss, and then someone arriving 'with words of spring in their hand', is quite an appropriate and well-expressed thought on World Suicide Prevention Day, and could save a life if acted upon. So words can be very powerful.
